06000 Downloading and Using Oracle's JInitiator

06001

What is JInitiator and how do I obtain a copy?

JInitiator is a product developed by Oracle Corporation which enables end users to run Oracle Developer Server applications directly within their Web browser. It is implemented as a plug-in for Netscape Navigator or an ActiveX object for Microsoft Internet Explorer.JInitiator is required to access some database applications and is available as a free download.

It is automatically downloaded to your client machine from the application server the first time your client Web browser accesses WebPE/Environmental. JInitiator is 8.5MB in size, so allow adequate download time based on the speed of your Internet connection. Although download times will vary with your actual connection and Internet loads, use the following estimates as guidelines:

Line Speed Download Time
(hh:mm:ss)
1.544 Mbs T-1 00:00:44
128 kbps ISDN 00:08:56
64 kbps ISDN 00:17:51
56 kbps 00:20:24
33.6 kbps 00:34:01
28.8 kbps 00:39:41
14.4 kbps 01:19:21

Will Oracle JInitiator work on non-Windows platforms?

When I try to start the Project Portal or download JInitiator, my browser returns a "page not found" message or blank screen. Why?

This is a problem related to your company's firewall and other security measures. The listener for the Project Portal Application is on TCP Server Port 85 and the Java Applet initially uses TCP Server Port 84 to launch and subsequently uses Port 9000. Check with your system administrator and make sure these ports are available for communications. Your administrator may wish to open these ports to WebPE only, in which case you'll need to know that WebPE's IP address is 4.33.17.187.

I'm trying to access WebPE/Environmental but the Main Menu is not displayed. I'm using Internet Explorer 4 with Service Pack 1 installed. Any ideas?

Yes. The original Service Pack 1 for Internet Explorer 4 has problems loading JInitiator. We recommend you install IE4 Service Pack 2, or, even better, IE5.

Can I obtain the browser add-ons on CDROM?

WebPE will mail you a CDROM containing JInitiator and Adobe Acrobat Reader 4. To obtain a copy, send email to support@webpe.com requesting the CDROM. Please include your name, organization name, and mailing address. The CDROM will be delivered to you within one week of request.
